Travelling in Dubai with Your Car Hire

Road names can sometimes be confusing with slight differences in spelling (due to different transliterations from Arabic). Often there is construction work that is taking place throughout and around the city - make sure to obey all road signs and take note of detours. We highly suggest getting a GPS with your vehicle, but if that option is not available, make sure you are equipped with road maps. Driving during morning and afternoon peak hours is not recommended as traffic is the busiest during these times.

Parking and Tolls in Dubai

Finding a place to park on the main streets of Dubai can be a little difficult during peak hours. Side street parking is permitted for an hourly fee. Look for orange parking signs indicating the type of parking zone. Different fees apply to each zone, are charged by the hour and require payment in dirham coins or prepaid parking cards (available at supermarkets).

The toll system is very simple but you can't pay at a toll gate - all payments must be via a pre-paid card. These cards are called Salik Cards and can be purchased just about anywhere, they cost 100 AED and each time you pass a toll gate 4 AED will be deducted from your card. There are six toll gates in the Emirates. The gates are only found in and around Dubai, so the roads are free to use anywhere else in the Emirates.
